Business and Economics

The best way to predict the future is to create it.
Peter Drucker

Attainment

Students are encouraged to engage in their learning from the start of all lessons. They must be ready and motivated to take responsibility for their own learning, to ask questions if they need advice and to communicate with their teachers, if they are unsure about any business or economic concept taught in the lesson. We want to develop entrepreneurs and leaders of the future who are resilient, confident and excellent critical thinkers giving them a competitive edge. Our students are at the centre of all our decisions, supported by passionate and highly experienced members of staff. We help students to develop their chains of analysis in their writing and to critically interpret different points of view, to draw informed decisions supported by evidence.

Appreciation

Business and Economics are universally recognised as global subjects because of their immense importance to achieving sustained Economic Growth of a country. Growth is fundamental to the creation of jobs, innovation and progress, trade connectivity and wealth creation. As a result, we strive to develop our students’ appreciation of how successful entrepreneurs make internal business decisions whilst at the same time are often influenced externally by Government policy or globalisation. As we work with love, we guide students through the significance of decisions made in terms of diversity, equity and inclusion. For example, the language used in the promotion of a product in different countries, or the importance the Bank of England places on the decision to change interest rates for macroeconomic stability and equity. This in turn guides students to understand and further appreciate how these decisions are affected by technological, cultural, social, ethical and environmental choices. We want to nurture entrepreneurial talent for the future, so as adults our students care for the well-being of others and make good environmental choices.

Reflection

We provide an ambitious, contemporary-rich curriculum, which builds confidence and a love of learning, inspiring entrepreneurial talent, encouraging risk-taking and resilience and prepares our students for their future careers. Our can-do culture focuses on their ability to reflect on their successes and challenges. By engaging in wider reading, students apply their knowledge and understanding to different business contexts, ranging from small enterprises to large multinationals companies operating in a global context. Our students are reflective, developing a curiosity and interest in the dynamic nature of the economy. According to the future of jobs report 2023, 75% of companies will adopt AI in the next 5 years. Our students’ ability to reflect and reason, encourages them to analyse their thought processes in relation to the impacts AI will have on both business and economic behaviour in the future, whilst at the same time, being critically aware. Their ability to evaluate helps them to problem-solve, encouraging them to draw well informed short-term and long-term judgements, further developing their intellect. Our department values are underpinned by ‘know more, remember more and as a result progress more’.
