EAL (English as an Additional Language)
Direct support for students with English as an Additional Language (EAL) is co-ordinated by the EAL Support Teacher, with support from our Special Educational Needs Coordinator, a visiting teacher from the language and achievement service and a Teaching Assistant who acts as a Key Worker for EAL students.
- Potential barriers to learning are overcome by individual assessment, advice to teachers and teaching assistants and support for the student in terms of self-esteem and sociability.
- Students with EAL are encouraged to take GCSE’s in their first languages and share their talents and cultural experiences with their peers.
- Older EAL students act as buddies for younger EAL students. We encourage students who have English as an additional language to train as Peer Mentors or Young Interpreters.
