Benchmark 4 - Linking Curriculum Learning to Careers
All teachers should link curriculum learning with careers. For example, STEM subject teachers should highlight the relevance of STEM subjects for a wide range of career pathways.
- By the age of 14, every student should have had the opportunity to learn how the different STEM subjects help people to gain entry to, and be more effective workers within, a wide range of careers.
Young adults who recall four or more encounters with employers while at school are five times less likely to be NEET and earn, on average, 18% more than peers who recall no such activities"
Dr Anthony Mann, Director of Research and Policy, Education and Employers Taskforce.
Here are a few simple things you can do to promote careers in your classroom:
- Display your card, discuss your journey
- Highlight the key skills they are developing in your subject and how they are relevant to careers in related sectors
- Invite connections from job roles or sectors that are connected to your subject to come in and speak to your students
- Create careers displays in your departments
- Include pathways students can take at age 16 and age 18
- Display websites and promote events such as open days, taster sessions, work experience opportunities etc.
